If you’re new to driving in Ontario, the graduated licensing system can feel confusing. Here’s a simple breakdown.

G1 Licence

This is your beginner’s licence.

Restrictions include:

  • Must drive with a fully licensed driver

  • No highway driving (400-series)

  • Zero alcohol level

You must hold G1 for:

  • 12 months (or 8 months with approved BDE)

G2 Licence

After passing your first road test:

  • You can drive alone

  • Some passenger restrictions apply

  • Still zero alcohol level

You must hold G2 for at least 12 months before taking your G test.

G Licence (Full Licence)

After passing your highway road test:

  • Full driving privileges

  • No passenger restrictions

  • Must maintain safe driving record

Why Proper Training Matters

Good training during G1 and G2 stages builds safe habits that last for years. It’s not just about passing — it’s about long-term safety.
